Morris Rugby used a strong second half to run past Newport Rugby, 58-26, in the Atlantic North D2 Men’s Championship held in Providence, RI. Morris now advances to the USA RugbyD2 National quarterfinals.

Morris, the Empire GU champions, and Newport, champions of NERFU, were the top seeds in their conference and the first half was a display of how each conquered league play.

Morris opened the match with a quick strike lwith quick phase play and a try from fullback Peter Crowley. Less than three minutes later, Newport scored off a highlight-reel play coming from a scrum. Newport’s Scrum Half Mark Simpson-Daniel darted off the back of a scrum to lure in the Morris defense and throw and over the shoulder pass to a streaking fullback, Terry Quick, who raced in the for the try. The remainder of the first half saw both sides put in a few more tries, and Morris took a 29-19 advantage to the final 40 minutes.

The second half was a different story as Morris used some fresh legs and the width of the pitch to its advantage. The boys from New Jersey poured in four more tries and a penalty kick to put the game away.

With the win, Morris Rugby claimed USA Rugby’s D2 Atlantic North Championship forthe second consecutive year, an accomplishment not matched in the Atlantic Northin a number of years.
