On Saturday, June 23, an Upstate Select XV traveled to Buffalo, NY to play the Western NY U23 Selects. The WNY U23 side, organized by the Buffalo Rugby Club (BRC), was compromised of college players who are home for the summer and current members of BRC.  The WNY U23s won by a score of 84-19.

The Upstate side was missing a few players from last summer's squad but they battled mightily versus a young, fit WNY side. WNY scored the first try as Mike Young (UB) dove into the corner. The conversion was missed but the tone had been set. Off a misplayed pass, Corey Ratka (BRC/St. Bonaventure) grabbed the loose ball on the bounce and ran in the second try for WNY.  Luca Wrabetz netted the conversion to make the core 12-0.

In the rest of the first half, WNY attacked and the Upstate played defense.  As a result, WNY scored two more tries, one by Young and the other by Anthony Gray (BRC). Wrabetz converted one and WNY had a comfortable 24-0 lead at the half.

In the second half, Upstate scored two early tries and a conversion to close within 12 points.  However, except for a late try and conversion by Max Grundy (BRC), the second half was all WNY.  Demonstrating clinical precision and youthful energy, the side rang up 60 more points taking the final score to 84-19.

Scoring in second half for WNY U23s were Young (three tries), Gray (two tries), Nick D'Amato (Fordham) three tries, Nate Moore (Buff. State) two tries and two conversions, Tim Darling (UB), Matt Ringland (BRC), Josh Bennett (BRC) one try apiece, and Wrabetz added three more conversions.

All-in-all it was a great day of rugby with some exceptional players on both sides. In the future, the hope is to expand the U23 program in the Upstate by adding squads in the Rochester, Syracuse and Saratoga areas.
