Alan Whelan, Village Lions Founder, Passes Away

NYC Rugby icon remembered for his leadership and spirit
Following a 10-year battle with cancer, Alan Whelan, Village Lions founder and legend, has passed away. The announcement was made to the rugby community by the Village Lions.
"The rugby community, and specifically that of New York City, has lost a leader and a legend," said Ken Pape, Empire GU President. "Alan was at the forefront of emerging rugby boom in the United States and went on to found or lead four rugby clubs, including the Village Lions. We share our condolences with Alan's family and Lions around the world. Cheers to Alan."
Services for Whelan will be held on Saturday, July 14, from 6-9pm at Weigand Brothers Funeral Home (49 Hillside Ave, Williston Park, NY).
